School Things That Delighted Us

Today is the first day of the school year in Los Angeles. I remember when I was a child, and I was always so excited for school to start after a long and leisurely summer.

Who can forgot going shopping for new clothes, and school supplies? What are some of the favorite things I got as a child? While I know it's dating myself...let me share a few.

1. White bucks shoes. The photo is of men's shoes, but, in the 50s when I was a child, girls wore them too. The very best manufacturer was Spalding. And we had these little pads with white powder to make them look clean.

2. Pencils.
When I was a kid, we always had to buy those number 2 yellow pencils. As an adult, I love a wide variety of pencils and pens. In fact, a few days ago I bought myself a Vespa pen and pencil set that's my new favorite possession. After all, I'm starting my new gardening class in three weeks, and I certainly need some new school supplies for class. Or do I?

3. Notebooks. When I was a child, the only choice (as I recall) was navy blue notebooks, which I can't seem to find photos of. And while the following items--erasers, Elmer's Glue, and Pee Chee folders--weren't my favorite supplies--I did find a 50s school supplies site, which made me smile. By the way, if anyone who reads this post is my age, what in the world did we need pipe cleaners for? I can't imagine.

4. Ballet shoes. I also remember when black ballet shoes were the rage. I can't imagine we were allowed to wear them to school, because when I was a child, girls couldn't wear pants or even sandals. But, I do remember coveting these shoes, and I'm certain I had a pair.

5. Head bands. Because I wore a "flip," I always loved head bands. (No, that's not my photograph. I was never a blonde.) But I do remember shopping for head bands. Go figure!

So...what school things delighted you?

I love school supplies. I still love to get school supplies for my kids and myself. Office supply stores are one of my favorite places. So much organization and potential there! I love pencils, pens, sharpies, and spiral notebooks. Love this fun post!

Dear KJ,
I love office supplies stores too. I'm not a shopper, but I can easily spend an hour in an office supply store, and feel like it's a Zen moment! How fun that we share this quality!

For me, it's the new textbooks and pads of lined paper. I think I'm going through school withdrawal; I found myself at my favorite bookstore today. . . .

Oh the smell of the stationery supply cupboard! The weight of new exercise books, pads and folders. The stiff cardboard covers, crisp blank pages of the exercise books. All the possibilities ahead!
Pencils, pens, (ink anyone?). Such fun to remember!
School uniform was ghastly, yet I smile as I realise that the clothes I wear by choice as an adult are also a form of 'uniform'!!

Dear Emma,
Your memories make me smile. "The stiff cardboard covers, crisp blank pages of the exercise books." Absolutely.

We didn't have uniforms, but you're right about choosing clothes as adults that are a form of "uniforms."
